Plenty of fight in winless Bulldogs

- JORDAN GERRANS

CENTRALS Trinity Beach are winless through the first four rounds of the 2018 AFL Cairns Women’s season but new coach Shaun Adaway is observing growth in his squad every week.

The Bulldogs started strongly on Saturday in Round 4 before the powerful Manunda Hawks kicked away in the second term, eventually holding on to claim a 9.8 (62) – 4.2 (26) victory.

The Bulldogs squad is vastly different to the one that represented the club in 2017 and Adaway, who previously coached the club’s reserves men’s side, is optimistic a victory is just around the corner.

“Each week is about improvement at this stage and we are tracking quite well considering we are quite different to the other teams,” Adaway said.

“We have had a few partners of the men’s team come over and play as well as a few new girls to the area join our team this year. A few did not have much sporting experience and they just wanted to have a go really.”

Brooklyn Lancaster booted two goals for the Bulldogs while Hawks Rosalie Boden, Stacey Paech, Lahtiffa Benjamin and Kareena White all kicked multiple goals in the win.

“The scoreboard might not have said we won but in our eyes we won the game,” Bulldogs player Kim Thomson said.

“At least 85 per cent of our girls are new to football so we are knocking a few cobwebs out and after a few more games, we will be the one’s to watch.”

In the other Round 4 game, a strong second half from North Cairns helped them beat South Cairns.
