Cyclones in prime spot

- TRENT SLATTER

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL THE Townsville Cyclones believe they have laid the platform for Northern Challenge glory after a promising opening weekend at Townsville Stadium.

The Cyclones claimed four wins from their six games, proving too good for Cairns and Mackay, but still have room for improvement after losing twice to reigning champions Rockhampton.

Townsville’s Davin Bretherton conceded it was frustrating to go down to their “arch nemesis”, but he said the Cyclones would take plenty of confidence from the two hardfought contests.

“They’re just so well-drilled and they’re a great team, but it was definitely hard-fought,” Bretherton said.

“Their coach came up and said it was one of the hardest games that they’ve played and we definitely put them under a lot of pressure, which is always good to hear.”

Townsville is ranked second after the opening round, which puts them in a strong position to make the grand final when the regional series wraps up in Mackay in September.

The Cyclones have welcomed new recruits this year and Bretherton expected they would only improve with more time together.

“It’s just making sure everyone knows their position,” he said. “If we can get that to where it becomes instinctive then I definitely think we’re in with a good shot. Ultimately, there’s one game every year that really counts and that’s the final.”
