Run to boost charities
Birdsville woman Jenna Brook has decided running from Tasmania to Cape York was the perfect way to draw attention to a deadly cancer. Ms Brook is between Greenvale and Mount Garnet and will visit Atherton, Mareeba, Mount Molloy, Lakeland, Coen and Bamaga as part of Running for Bums. The more than 4500km trip will help raise awareness of bowel cancer, the second biggest cancer killer in Australia.
Ms Brook has already raised $35,486 to go towards bowel cancer charities and wants people to participate in Running for Bums by donating or by having a conversation about family history of the disease with loved ones.
“While I’ve never particularly liked to use the phrase journey when describing the Running for Bums endeavour, the further along I get into it the more apt that word becomes,” she wrote on a recent blog post.
“Something of this magnitude is very rarely about the destination. Yes, you could very well argue that it’s solely about the destination, but that would diminish what happens along the way to simply being a means to an end.
“I have not placed myself into this situation where discomfort has become the norm and comfort a rarity for the destination itself. I have placed myself here to tell a story and to, in many ways, immerse myself in the experience while maintaining a bystander view point in some respects. After all, there are easier ways to get to Cape York.”
Ms Brook has not always been a runner but has always exhibited a determination to tackle any challenge.
She took part in her first endurance event in 2012 walking 435km across the Simpson Desert and has finished two 250km ultra marathons.
