‘Lucky’ Marlins snare wins to stay unbeaten

- JORDAN GERRANS

NETBALL COACH Winnie Whately admits her Marlins were lucky to come away with two wins but the Cairns-based state netball league team remains unbeaten through five games of the 2018 campaign.

The Marlins recorded victories over Wide Bay Thundercats and Capricorn Claws in Rockhampton on Saturday to improve to an impressive 5-0 on the season.

The Marlins trailed at the final change against Wide Bay Thundercats in the first game of the double-header but fought back in the final term to secure victory.

Whately was not overly impressed with her Marlins’ showing across the two games but was happy they did enough to get to get through unscathed.

The Thundercats and Claws were down the bottom of the ladder prior to the weekend and Whately said that could have been in the back of her squad’s mind.

“The results were pleasing but our performances probably lacked a bit of polish,” Whately said.

“Maybe we were a bit complacent perhaps or we were not prepared for the weekend, I am not sure.

“I feel like we were not at our best. There has been a big couple of weeks of club netball and the girls looked a bit tired.

“But to their toughed it out.”

Whately praised the performances of Claudia Philp and Akayla Peterson across the two games.

The Cairns club hosts the next round of fixtures across June 23 and 24. credit they
