First run scoops win for a big treat

- JORDAN GERRANS

GREYHOUND Tina Sierra got her serve of ice cream early on Saturday morning.

After six starts in Townsville, Black River-based trainer Greta Thomson sent Tina Sierra for her first run at Cairns’ Cannon Park on Friday night.

She returned early on Saturday morning with a victory over the 544m distance and an eye towards the upcoming Cairns Cup.

Thomson did not make the Far North drive, instead fellow Townsville trainer Robert Lound took Tina Sierra but Thomson was ready to give her a treat of ice cream once she returned to her kennel.

“With the Cairns Cup coming up over the next couple of months, I just wanted to see how she would go,” Thomson said. “Hopefully, that is the aim. “She is not a short distance bitch, she likes the longer trips.

“She got her serve of ice cream at 1am on Saturday morning when they got back.”

Tina Sierra scored by two and a half lengths on Friday night in the fifth event of the six race card.

“She can run the distance that is for sure,” Thomson said.

“The longest distance she had been over was the 520m at Lismore so we were keen to get her in the 544m at Cairns. I was quite pleased with her.”

Leading Cairns trainer Emma Bryant had a night out at Cannon Park on Friday evening, training three of the six winners on the card.
