Crews douse threat of flames spreading

- PETE MARTINELLI peter.martinelli@news.com.au

THE cause of a fire which gutted a two-storey home at Trinity Beach is yet to be determined.

Five crews were sent to the blaze in the empty house yesterday afternoon.

Heavy black smoke could be seen from Captain Cook Highway as flames billowed from the house behind the Trinity Beach Shopping Centre.

Resident Wayne Clancy, who lives 80m from the house at 5 Kiriwina Close, said: “I smelled a lot of smoke and walked outside and saw there was a bloody house on fire. We could see the flames through the trees.”

“The thing about fire is that it can get out of control and get the next house.”

Mr Clancy packed photos and readied his car in case the blaze spread to neighbouring houses.

“It is lucky we are slightly above it,” he said. “If we were in the southern states it would have rushed up the hill.

“Because it is so lush here Watch footage of the fire at www.cairnspost.com.au and we have green undergrowth we were OK.”

He said the house was well ablaze by the time fire crews arrived at 2.25pm

“By the time the fire brigade had arrived the house was pretty much burned out,” Mr Clancy said.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said the two-storey house was “fully involved” when crews attended, but there were no reports of anyone injured. The house was gutted by the time the fire was under control by 2.51pm.

The QFES spokeswoman said crews had also been protecting neighbouring houses.
