Bulldogs get into spirit of Indigenous Round

-

A PLAYER-DRIVEN initiative saw the Centrals Trinity Beach Youth Girls team kick off the 2018 AFL Cairns Indigenous Round with traditional dance earlier this week.

Professional sporting teams and events are often opened by traditional dance and the Bulldogs from Crathern Park wanted to follow suit to celebrate their culture on Monday night ahead of their game.

Bulldogs coach Bev Crimmins said players from the Youth Girls and Centrals Trinity Beach senior women’s team drove the idea.

“Some of the women’s and girls’ players from indigenous backgrounds came to me and said they really wanted to be involved in the round and asked what they could do towards it,” Crimmins said.

“We put our heads together and designed the Indigenous Round guernseys and then it went from there. Ruby Nandy, who plays in our women’s team, was key to driving it, as well as a few girls she brings down from Kuranda. “It was amazing.” On the field, the Bulldogs had a win over Pyramid Power on Monday night to keep their unbeaten 2018 season alive in the under-17.5 Youth Girls competition. Twins Litonya and Laquoiya Motlap starred for the Bulldogs while Daysia Creed-Wray and Chelsea Oxlade were busy in the win.

Most AFL Cairns clubs will wear indigenous guernseys designed by local players and artists across this week’s games.
