Take it as read, this was great challenge
By Sian Jackson and Charli Longbottom, Year 3, OLHOC
THE Readingwealth Games was a challenge for all the children at Our Lady Help of Christians School to encourage them to read more books.
It went for 12 weeks from February 26 to May 25.
Last year we did the Cassowary Cup but this year we did the Readingwealth Games because the Commonwealth Games were held in April.
The challenge was to get gold, silver and bronze medals in every event.
There were seven events: mountain biking, rugby sevens, 1500m freestyle, basketball, weightlifting, relay and triathlon.
Some people found weightlifting the hardest because you had to read really thick books.
After reading your books you filled in a sheet and took it back to the library and your name was displayed in the hall of fame.
A page with your photo and stickers for the medals completed was put up on the library wall so the whole school could see your achievement.
For every medal you won you earnt points for your house colour.
The team that was coming first place in week two of term two was McKenna with 640 points.
Prep had 26 people in the hall of fame by week six, Year 1 had 21, Year 2 had 9, Year 3 had 19, Year 4 had 18, Year 5 had 26 and Year 6 had 13.
It was a lot of work for the library staff to put up the hall of fame and record all the information but the different colours on the wall looked really cool.
The winners were announced at assembly on May 25.
Five students received prizes because they completed all the events.
To everyone’s surprise, McSweeney house came first with a lead of 20 points.
School librarian Joan Carbone said the Readingwealth Games were great because it got everyone reading different books.
We thank the library staff for organising the Readingwealth Games and hope we can do a similar challenge next year.
