Powder bans set to take off

Airport expects smooth change

CAIRNS Airport staff are ready to implement the latest Australian Government restrictions on what can be brought on-board an international aircraft.

But management say travellers are already used to screening requirements and the addition of powders to the list will not pose a problem.

The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s TravelSECURE branch issued the changes, requiring quantity restrictions on some types of powders packed in carry-on luggage.

From June 30, inorganic powders such as salt, talcum powder and sand must be in containers of 350ml or less.

The total volume of inorganic powders must not exceed 350ml per person.

Passengers cannot tip powders out to pass the 350ml threshold as the restriction is on container volume. The restriction does not apply on domestic Australian flights. Restrictions are still in place on liquid, aerosol or gel items, which must be in containers of 100ml or less. Containers must fit into one transparent and resealable plastic bag such as a snap-lock sandwich bag. Only one bag is allowed per passenger. Containers larger than 100ml, even if only partially filled, containing liquids, aerosols or gels will not be allowed through the security screening point.

At the screening point all powders in your carry-on baggage must be separately presented for screening. They do not need to be put in a resealable plastic bag.

Cairns Airport chief operations officer Kate McCreeryCarr said the airport, like other international airports across Australia, would be imple- menting the changes.

“Pamphlets and frequently asked questions will be available at check-in … and information in regards to restrictions is available on the Cairns Airport website with links to the TravelSECURE site,” she said.

“Exemptions apply for reasonable amounts of baby products, prescription and non-prescription medicines and medical items required during a flight.

“All organic powders are exempt. This includes most powdered foods, coffee, protein powder and powdered baby formula.

“All Cairns Airport staff are aware of the new powder restrictions from June 30 and we expect this to be a smooth transition.

“Travellers have been used to the screening requirements around liquids and gels that have been in place for international travel for several years. The powder restrictions are an extension of this.”
