Wallabies fenced in Animals in kamikaze bid to escape fields

DISTRESSIN­G footage of wallabies flinging themselves into a chain-link fence has triggered an outcry from animal welfare activists.

Trinity Beach resident Patty Villegas slammed Cairns Regional Council over the fence’s recent constructi­on at the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs AFL Club, claiming it is trapping wallabies with no escape from roaming dogs.

“We’ve contacted the club, asking them to make sure the gates are kept shut,” she said.

“But people leave the main one wide open and that’s where they’re coming in.”

The fence was erected to keep wallabies – and by extension, their droppings – off the field following concerns about players getting infections to cuts and grazes.

Division 9 councillor Brett Olds said the council was considerin­g one-way gates but he suspected human interferen­ce was to blame.

“I know they’re not the smartest animals on the planet, but trying to kill themselves by running full sprint towards two big dogs and continuall­y running into a fence?” he said.

“I’ve been down there so many times since the fence was put up and I’ve never seen that many wallabies in there at once – even when they were first installed and the gates were all left open overnight.” natural sources,”
