Mariners hooked on Edmonton upgrade

- DANIEL BATEMAN

AN upgrade of Edmonton’s boat ramp has been completed a week ahead of schedule, giving boaties a wider and easier path to the water.

The $685,000 floating walkway is now open for use, with the two-lane boat ramp widened to accommodate it.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said the upgrade would improve access and assist with any on-water congestion during busy periods.

“It will also allow for faster and improved boat launching and retrieval operations and better access for children and the elderly,” he said.

“Works also included the placement of grouted rock shoulders on the upstream side of the ramp, which will prevent erosion and prolong the life of the ramp.”

Other enhancements to the site included improved lighting and the relocation of power services.

It was funded through the Queensland Government’s Marine Infrastructure Fund.

The fund received an additional $30 million committed over two years in this year’s State Budget.

Edmonton fisher Ricky Misener uses the ramp nearly every weekend.

Mr Misener said the upgrade made the facility accessible even at low tides.

“I reckon the upgrade is brilliant,” he said.

“Sometimes if the tide was too low, you’d have to go to Redbank (Creek) on the way to Yarrabah.

“But this is much more convenient now with the upgrade.”
