Mr Allen said there were also more entries across all the exhibitions than last year.

“It’s full steam ahead right now,” he said.

Atherton Show sponsorship and promotions officer Bree Hargreaves said the popular yearly event, which kicked off yesterday, usually drew a 6000-strong crowd over the two days.

But Ms Hargreaves said they were hoping for bigger numbers given all the excitement around ShowTime FMX as the main entertainment drawcard. The Atherton Show also had more entries across all exhibits including 250 more than last year in arts and crafts and 100 more in needlework.

There was even a sensory session yesterday morning between 10am and midday, for those who have sensory processing disorders, which Ms Hargreaves said drew a great attendance.

“Our volunteers have done well spending hundreds of hours bringing all this together,” she said. ROYSTON Dabah is no stranger to domestic violence, having used knives, a freezer door and even a didgeridoo to threaten his de facto wife.

The 53-year-old Yarabah man regularly beat his defacto partner for eight of the 10 years that they were in a relationship.

Dabah pleaded guilty in Cairns Magistrate’s Court yesterday to breaching a domestic violence order at a residence at Gribble St, Yarrabah, on June 14.

Dabah – a disability support pensioner – had a .253 per cent blood alcohol content when police arrested him shortly after the woman fled from the house on foot.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Stuart Berry told the court Dabah had “a long history of violence and threats against the aggrieved”.

He said in an earlier attack Dabah flew into a rage, tore the door from a freezer and threw it to the ground before threatening his partner with a didgeridoo to keep her quiet.

“He said: ‘I’ll smash your legs with this didgeridoo if you get the police’,” Snr Const. Berry said.

“Your history is relevant to the sentencing options I have,” Magistrate Kevin Priestly said.

“With domestic violence, leaving the sentence intact as a suspended sentence would be appropriate.”

He sentenced Dabah to one year in prison, to be suspended for two years after serving three months.
