Rangers deny Comets

- JORDAN GERRANS

MARLIN Coast coach James Tweed has praised his playing group’s ability to bounce back, labelling their draw with Southside on Saturday night one of their best results of 2018.

Responding after their 4-0 drubbing by Stratford Dolphins FC last Sunday, Rangers defended strongly for 90 minutes at Walker Road to come away with a much-needed point.

Both clubs set out with a defensive mindset, with neither coach surprised the contest finished without a goal.

Tweed is hopeful the composed performance will set the top of the table Rangers in the right direction for the rest of the campaign.

“Southside set up defensively and wanted to nick it on the counter attack – they almost did on a couple of occasions,” Tweed said.

“I was happy with our response after the 4-0 defeat last week. It was a good, professional performance from our team and one of our best this season.”

Comet Dylan Soares copped a red card in the draw, for two yellows, and will miss the club’s next match while Matthew Barnes will also be unavailable for receiving his fifth yellow card of the campaign, resulting in a one-week ban.

Southside coach Dion Readman says his squad need to learn from their mistakes.

“Marlin Coast did not want to get beaten, they frustrated us and our discipline was poor,” Redman said.

“It was poor from us, you cannot win a game of football with one bloke in the sin bin and another sent off.

“We did well to hold on and get a draw.

“We need to keep our composure and not get frustrated.”

In other Round 12 results, Innisfail United drew with Leichhardt while Edge Hill United put three goals past Mareeba United.

Leichhardt, JCU Strikers and Edge Hill United all scored wins in the women’s side of the competition.
