Crocs finish sixth

CAIRNS basketball­er Tamuri Wigness and his Australian Crocs fell in their final game of the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, losing 77-81 to Turkey to finish sixth. The electric Far North point guard contribute­d 18 points in the final game of the tournament. He also grabbed five rebounds. The Crocs sixth-place finish is their equal third-best result overall in tournament history with the Crocs finishing with a winning record of 4-3.

Test for Missile

LEADING trainer Roy Chillemi will roll the dice on a possible big sprint mission with star young galloper Grey Missile at Cluden Park today. Chillemi has bypassed the Stockland Townsville Dollars for three-year-olds to test the powerful grey against the older, seasoned performers in the Weight-For-Age (1300m). The race has attracted a crack field and offers the winner ballotfree entry into the $100,000 Cleveland Bay Handicap (1300m) at Cluden on July 28. “I want to try the horse against a better-quality field against the big boys where the speed is on,” Chillemi said.

Fox on great run

AUSTRALIA’S Jessica Fox has continued her stellar unbeaten run at the Canoe Slalom World Cup, with her sixth win in a row. Fox finished 4.5 seconds ahead of current world champion Brit Mallory Franklin in the C1 event, with Brazilian Ana Satila behind in third. Her performanc­e in Augsburg, Germany, follows an impressive World Cup run in Poland and Slovakia. Fellow Australian Rosalyn Lawrence finished eighth in the C1 final and Noemie Fox finished in 19th place. Timothy Anderson finished 16th in the men’s K1 while a 50-second penalty saw Lucien Delfour relegated to 33rd.

Enrique tip for Spain

FORMER Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is to be named as the new Spain coach, according to widespread reports in the Spanish media yesterday. Leading newspaper Marca said on their front cover the 48-year-old has been chosen by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales as the successor to Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked the day before the World Cup. Luis Enrique won two Liga titles, one Champions League and three King’s Cups as Barca coach between 2014 and 2017.
