Matildas’ teen scores five against Cambodia

FORMER Cairns-based footballer Mary Fowler banged in five goals as the Young Matildas continued their perfect start to the 2018 AFF Women’s Championsh­ip in Indonesia, defeating Cambodia 12-0.

The green and gold previously defeated Malaysia and Timor Leste, with Fowler scoring a brace against Malaysia.

She now has seven goals through three games.

“Happy to see both our 15year-old players, Mary Fowler and Holly McNamara, on the scoreboard last night,” coach Leah Blayney said.

“Overall our squad is travelling well and we look forward to embracing the challenge that lay ahead with respects to our match against defending AFF Champions Thailand.”

■ CAIRNS hoop Sonja Wiseman banged on the door but just fell short of cracking a winner over the Rockhampto­n Cup carnival.

Over the two big days of racing at Rockhampto­n Jockey Club, the Cannon Parkbased jockey took 11 rides and rode three placegette­rs.

Wiseman combined Clinton Thompson to with finish second with A Littlebitt­amagic in the Class 1 Handicap on Saturday.

■ FORMER Cairns basketball­er Cameron Tragardh returned from injury in his Mackay Meteors’ 10-point win over Townsville on Saturday night.

The veteran power forward had missed the past three weeks of the QBL season through injury but made his comeback with 20 points and nine rebounds in the triumph. The former Taipans and Marlins fan favourite hit seven of his 10 shots.

■ CAIRNS City Lions junior Daniel Charleswor­th was named in Southport’s best players in their tight win over Brisbane in the NEAFL.

The inaccurate Sharks had 25 scoring shots to the Lions’ 18 but held on to win by two points with Charleswor­th busy down back.
