WHY ARE GENERIC BRANDS CHEAPER
THE reason generic brands may be cheaper than brand-name medicines is because the manufacturers may not have needed to spend substantial amounts of money on developing the medicine, or buying the rights to sell it. Usually, original brand companies have been selling the active ingredient in a generic medicine for many years before the law permits a generic medicine to be made. This means that a great deal is already known and understood about the safety and performance of the active ingredient. This also helps to contribute to the ability of the generic medicine’s manufacturer to make the medicine at lower cost. Because a generic medicine must be “bioequivalent to the original means it requires rigorous scientific testing. Even a below 10 per cent difference can cause the generic medicine to fail the test.
