FIBA fines likely for Boomers

- GILBERT GARDINER

BASKETBALL ALL of the Australian players involved in the melee which marred the Boomers’ World Cup qualifier against Philippines could be fined, including Melbourne United star Chris Goulding.

Goulding was set upon and pummelled by a pack of Filipino players and officials during the spiteful clash at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on July 2.

The saga should reach its crescendo in the next 24 to 48 hours, with FIBA expected to hand down its findings.

The world basketball federation has conducted a secret inquiry into the incident.

Basketball Australia pleaded for an extension last week.

Since FIBA sanctions also apply to the NBL, Basketball Australia is keen to prevent Boomers veteran Daniel Kickert from sitting out a large chunk of the domestic season.

The big man, who signed with the Sydney Kings in the off-season, is set to cop the brunt of the FIBA investigation.

Kickert, who was charged with unsportsmanlike conduct along with Australian NBA star Thon Maker, is likely to be suspended for several games for striking Roger Pogoy.

The NBA, unlike the NBL, does not fall under FIBA jurisdiction, which allows the top-10 draft pick to fulfil his role at the Milwaukee Bucks.

FIBA is expected to dish out fines to all players and officials involved in the melee.
