On other matters

Could someone please explain to many other confused Australians, and myself, how our National Rugby League competition is called the NRL. I and many others must have been elsewhere when we annexed New Zealand and made it a state of Australia. Maybe the NRL hierarchy can explain to our kids, who are missing out on a career because another nation is usurping our own kids’ future. Icarus, Atherton

Balancing work and home critical, so please spend time with your kids or you just won’t cut it as a dad. Janelle, Woree

Laura Jayes Opinion Piece ‘indigenous leaders in crisis call’ (CP 23/7) on the sad and appalling case of the rape of a two year old girl in Tennant Creek reports that a John Howard style intervention in that community will not be tolerated. This is not a race issue and whether you are ‘black, white or brindle’, for children who are vulnerable, their safety and well being cannot be compromised by bureaucratic red tape and paper shuffling. That can come, after they have been made safe. Brett, Aloomba

Gary Smith from Ravenshoe (letters 21/7). There is no empirical evidence for man made climate change, none. Remember when it was called global warming, that’s because it’s meant to be a world wide problem, that has turned out to be a lie. In fact we are heading into global cooling and that will kill more people than warming ever will. The Can Cutter, Edmonton

Weighing kids at school big joke. Is the government going to weigh teachers and staff? What about ministers for education? Is the criteria going to be “of slight build”. Let teachers teach. That’s what we send our kids to school to learn. Lunch boxes, weight, what next? Carolyn, Mt Sheridan

Fans that start fights at sporting events like what happened at the Geelong/Melbourne game on Saturday night should have life bans to all sporting games. David, Woree

More career-extending announcements from professional reef-savers. Dr Ridd suggested one per cent of funding should go to proper independent peer review. Who do we vote for to get that in? Mic, Cairns
