Learning on the road in journey

- JACK LAWRIE jack.lawrie@news.com.au

DIMITRIOS Toumbos will have a lot of time to think on a bike ride from Cairns to his hometown of Adelaide.

Next weekend, he will depart on a journey to raise awareness of the Australian Childhood Foundation.

He will leave from Mt Garnet heading down to Charters Towers to avoid traffic on the Bruce Highway until he gets south of Brisbane.

“Physically I’m fit enough to ride with all my equipment,” he said.

“I’m going to pace myself, meander, take my time; I could be on the road for up to a year.”

Along the way, Mr Toumbos will stop at various towns and get to know the people.

He will ask them three questions: why do you live here, what’s your dream, and what’s one piece of advice you’d like to share with the world?

At the end, he will hand them a business card with a link to the Australian Childhood Foundation Everyday Hero donation page.

“I was brought up in a house where the material aspects of life were met, but it wasn’t very supportive; parents were just engulfed in their own things,” he said.

“I know there are a lot of children in that boat who need a helping hand, and children are our future.”
