Loss feels like win to Storm

- SAMUEL DAVIS

SUBURBS may have walked away with the silverware but Edmonton Storm coach Mark Volpe still walked away with a smile on his face.

The CDRL rivals clashed for the Ryan Deemal Shield on Saturday night at Petersen Park, with the visitors prevailing 34-18 over the winless Storm.

While Cephas Chinfat starred for Suburbs with two tries, Volpe said the return of halves combination Steven Murgha and Justin Torney showed his side could be competitive with quality sides.

“I was definitely happy with our game,” he said.

“We got in and really grinded the game out.

“Justin and Steven gave us really good direction and we’re hoping they’ll play out the rest of the season.

“They’ve both been injured, which has meant some of our younger players have had to step up for us.

“I reckon if there was an extra 20 minutes we could have run away with it.”

The last-placed Storm travel to play second-last Mareeba hopeful of finally breaking their duck this season.

“After this game I’m really looking forward to see how we’ll go,” Volpe said.

“They won’t be easy but I’m looking forward to seeing if we can build off this match.”

The win means Suburbs’ faint hopes of playing finals remain alive for another week.

“I believe they’re a finals team. They’ve got a grinding style,” Volpe said.

“It’s always a big game for us and a hard match.”

The Ryan Deemal Shield is played in honour of former coach Harry Deemal’s son.

The match has been played in his memory since 2008.
