FUTURE STARS
NOD TO JUNIOR SPORTS:
THE Far North’s aspiring rugby league stars will relish the opportunity to take their footy skills to the next level when a National Rugby League youth holiday clinic comes to Cairns in October.
The 2018 NRL/QRL Spring Mod Camp is a three-day stayin experience for rugby league players aged 10-12 (Mod League players) with a focus on fun, participation and skills development, not only on the field, but away from it as well.
It will be the first mod camp in Far North Queensland in more than five years.
Local NRL development officer Alby Anderson says it’s fantastic to have our own camp again.
“It will certainly save the children and parents of Far North Queensland the hassle of having to travel down to the Townsville camp,” he says.
Campers will participate in team-building activities, learn leadership skills, pick up healthy nutritional habits, as well as learn new rugby league skills through a range of fourpoint training plans.
“It also gives boys and girls an opportunity to make new friends through the great game of rugby league,” Anderson says.
An important program for the grassroots development of rugby league, past mod camps in Townsville and Mackay have been attended by some of the NRL’s newest rising stars, including North Queensland Cowboys’ new kids on the block, Jake Clifford (above) and Enari Tuala, who both attended mod camps as juniors.
Anderson says there are plans to run the camps annually.
“We will gain feedback from junior leagues clubs in the region to see what time of the year would be most beneficial for them,” he says.
“This will also need to fit in with our all-abilities and female clinics throughout the year.”
The 2018 NRL/QRL Spring Mod Camp costs $320 per child, which includes a bag, football, shirt, hat, accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and three-days of coaching clinics and development programs.
The camp will be held at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre, McAvoy St, Daradgee, from October 2-4.
