Rolling up for the biggest show

By Reef Ward, Year 7, St Augustine’s College

THE Cairns Show was attended this year by more than 70,000 people and this included all the St Augustine’s College Year 7 boarders.

The boarders went to the show on Wednesday night and we got to look around the show between 3pm-6pm.

The most popular things we did included the rides and sideshow alley. Some of us also bought food.

I went on a ride called Hangover, where you swing backwards and forwards, completing 360 degree turns and hanging upside down.

I also went on a ride called Speed, where you get to sit on a seat and it spins you and throws you around.

It is really high and some of my friends found it pretty scary, especially the ones who are scared of heights.

One of my friends went on the roller coaster and he said it was terrifying.

He was talked into going on the ride by a mate after a bad experience at Movie World several years ago.

He said it made him dizzy and it was too high as he is scared of heights.

He has vowed he will never go on a roller coaster again.

Some of the highlights from my trip to the show include the reptile and insect exhibits as well as the petting zoo. I also liked seeing the blacksmiths at work making handles.

The vintage cars and old steam engines were pretty amazing to see.

I liked riding the quad bike especially because it was wet and slippery in the mud.

Some of the boys bought showbags and the most popular one by far was the Sour Warhead showbag.

Some of the other exhibitions include animals, cars, motorbikes, artworks, fireworks, woodchopping, pole-climbing and displays from lots of local businesses and schools.

The Cairns Show was a great experience for anyone who was lucky enough to attend and it was certainly a night out that all the Year 7 boarders enjoyed.
