Cairns FC expect fireworks against WA side

- JORDAN GERRANS

CAIRNS FC boss Danny Graystone is expecting a physical encounter in their bid to advance to the final 16 of the FFA Cup on Wednesday.

The Far North club drew Armadale SC late last month and after a month of scouting, the Cairns NPL club are just hours away from their chance to step towards facing an ALeague team.

Graystone says the West Australians will implement a style of football not usually seen in the Queensland NPL and is more common in EnGERAINT glish lower leagues. “I have spoken to a few people who know Armadale and are aware of them and have watched their games,” Graystone said.

“I have got some footage that has come through, too.

“They are a going to be a very different team than what we are used to playing against up here in Queensland because they play a very physical brand of football.

“They are tall and strong and play a long ball game, which we are not used too.”

Formerly known as Far North Queensland Heat, Cairns FC has participated in every edition of the FFA Cup so far but is yet to win a match at this stage of the tournament.

Manchester-born Graystone, who played football for Stoke City and Crewe, came on for the final few minutes of Saturday’s loss to Magpies Crusaders to ensure none of his players were hit with injury late in the game. With an eye on Wednesday night’s FFA Cup clash against Perth’s Armadale, injury-hit Cairns travelled with only 12 players.

Last week, Lions FC progressed to the last 16 of the FFA Cup with a thrilling 3-2 win over Olympic FC at Richlands. In the battle of the NPL Queensland heavyweights, Lions dominated early before a fightback
