Saints get confidence boost

- JORDAN GERRANS

CAIRNS Saints have claimed their first big scalp in their comeback season in AFL Cairns Women.

After recording three victories over the winless Centrals Trinity Beach this season, Saints triumphed over one of the big three clubs in the competition on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to beat Manunda.

Saints trailed by 16-points at halftime with Hawks’ Kareena ROUND 14 Manunda Hawks 3.2 (20) defeated by Cairns Saints 3.9 (27). North Cairns 11.15 (81) defeated Centrals Trinity Beach Womens 0.2 (2) White goals.

“Manunda capitalised in that second quarter when they kicked three straight goals,” Saints assistant coach Ryan kicking three early Fielding said. “The girls came off at halftime disappointed because they were not making the most of opportunities.”

Saints came roaring back in the second half on the back of majors from Rickie Fielding, Tahlia Smith and Akayla Peterson for a seven-point win.

“Luckily in the last quarter we were able to capitalise on the extended possession we had with goals.,” Fielding said.

In the other Round 14 game, North Cairns took care of the Bulldogs with ease. CAIRNS-based hoop Sonja Wiseman takes a strong book of rides into today’s seven race card at Mackay Turf Club. With the first day of the Cairns Cup carnival this Saturday, Wiseman takes six rides, including two for Yeppoon trainer Vic Heading. Premiership winning Tablelands jockey Wanderson D’Avila will also take three rides.

Lady eyes Cairns Cup

ROOKIE Townsville trainer Michael Geaney has his eyes set further north after Lady Skills delivered him his hometown Cup on Saturday. Geaney has just two horses in work and welcomed the former Victorian mare Lady Skills to his stable only a few months ago. Saturday’s $100,000 Townsville Cup was her fourth win in six starts for him. He is looking to the Cairns Cup and the Cairns Amateurs, where wins in both races would nett the $200,000 Northern Crowns Bonus.
