Cup Carnival lifted to whole new level

Cannon Park improvements mean all racegoers are the big winners

THIS year’s Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival promises to be a special two-day event.

There are many positives and many people helping to make this year’s racing event amazing.

With nearly 40 years preparing for race days, this is the biggest improvement I have ever seen in one year anywhere and anytime in my career. We are talking 100 per cent improvement in oncourse wagering and maybe over 200 per cent in off-course wagering.

Records for the club will tumble in so many aspects.

There are people involved that make things happen, including current president, Tom Hedley, past presidents John Piccone and John Smith, who have each contributed so much to the club through leadership, corporate sponsorship and donations.

My privilege is to be part of such a great team of staff and volunteers at a time when it is all coming together.

Racing Queensland has helped with the track upgrade and looking at the track today, it and the facilities just look sensational and immaculate.

Stakeholders have something great to look forward to with record prizemoney that will secure the best fields possible in the region.

But it is our improved facilities (so much through donations) that mean many people will not recognise the Cairns Jockey Club. Cannon Park has had all kinds of improvements, including: ● New Corporate Area, under the trees, designed for weddings ● Elevated President’s Lawn area, including a 30mx20m marquee ● Owners and Trainers bar ● Extended corporate area 35mx20m in Canadian Club Picnic in the Park sector ● Renovated Tropical Veranda ● Renovated Wolf Blass corporate area ● Renovated and extended Silks bar ● Renovated and extended Winning Post bar ● Renovated Members bar and this year, a number of temporary themed bars, including: o A’tivo o Canadian Club o Pimm’s o Red Bull

WITH NEARLY 40 YEARS PREPARING FOR RACE DAYS, THIS IS THE BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN ONE YEAR ANYWHERE... JOHN CAMERON
