Hard work Power behind Open win

- JORDAN GERRANS

AS simple as it sounds, experienced Cairns golfer Frank Power says more practice and time on the green is the catalyst behind his stunning form in 2018.

Yesterday afternoon at Cairns Golf Club, the 45-yearold romped in to lift his fifth City of Cairns Open crown across his career and second in a row.

Just last month, Power claimed the Far North Queensland Open at Gordonvale.

The veteran golfer does not have any secret methods or tricks to his recent run of hot form – just good old fashioned hard work.

“I have just put in a bit more practice this year,” the modest Power said.

“It is starting to pay off with my practice on my short game.

“I have had a bit more time to put in and I have really been enjoying my golf this year – the results have followed.

“It is just making time for golf, which I had not in the years before.”

Power started with a sixshot lead on Sunday morning in the 54-hole championship and was never really troubled on the last day, to add to his 1996, 2003, 2014 and 2017 crowns with a eight-shot win.

“The first two days were great but the third day was good, I was a bit shaky at the end the last few holes,” Power said. “I started six shots ahead on Sunday morning but I played a couple of bad shots across 14, 15 and 16 to drop four shots but besides that it was pretty solid throughout.”

He will now look towards competing in the Queensland Open later this year, to be played from November 1-4 at The Brisbane Golf Club.

“I just have to try to keep my form going now,” Power said with a laugh.

General manager of Cairns Golf Club Matt Bolton said Power was a worthy winner and he was pleased with how the annual event ran in 2018.

“We had 200 players take part in the Cairns Golf Club, which included 85 A-grade players,” Bolton said.

“We also had 65 visitors from interstate come to Cairns to play as well.

“We ran a longest drive competition on Friday night too, which was popular.”
