Good sport wins award
By Annabel Boswell and Rafaela Southon, Year 6, Holy Cross School
THE Peter McGaughy Good Sport Award is given to a Holy Cross student who has shown compassion, respect, good sportsmanship and comfort towards others.
It is a 26-year tradition at Holy Cross to give this award following the annual Athletics Carnival.
The award is named after a teacher that taught at Holy Cross in its early years.
The staff instigated the award after Year 5 teacher and acting principal Mr Peter McGaughy became sick and died.
Mr McGaughy believed that not everyone can be excellent in sport, but everyone can be a good sport.
The person who is presented with the award doesn’t necessarily have to be the best athlete, but demonstrates good sportsmanship daily.
The 2018 Peter McGaughy Good Sport Award has been awarded to Gwyneth Panit.
Year 6 student Gwyneth (left) has shown all of the traits that you require to have to receive this award in 2018.
She is kind, gives her best always and demonstrates all the qualities of a good sport.
The person who wins the award gets their name engraved on the perpetual trophy as well as receiving a trophy to keep.
If you look at the trophy closely you can see all of the names of the people who have won the award since 1992.
Congratulations Gwyneth!
