Thrills of taking to airwaves

By Johrace Stacey, Year 10, Cairns State High School

-

LAST month, all Cairns State High School Year 10 students were placed in work experience for the week.

I was lucky enough to do mine at BBM 98.7 FM Indigenous Radio Station. During my time at BBM, I was taught a lot of radio features and information about what BBM does and how they do it.

With that knowledge, I was set a task to work on a music log that was to be played overnight. Another task I was given was to edit prerecorded interviews.

BBM also gave me the chance to work in the main studio where live shows take the competition. The aims of the ABBC are for Year 10 students to learn more about the brain and its functions, to educate teachers and students on the latest research findings, give an opportunity to discover potential career pathways, and to assist in place. What I enjoyed most about my BBM experience was the chance to speak on air in some shows.

BBM let me give the morning weather report, speak in a show called Dial-aHit and even let me speak on a popular show called National Talk Black.

At the start I was nervous to speak on air but after some good tips, I came around in the end.

I believe my involvement with BBM and the crew definitely helped me learn some new, interesting knowledge on radio aspects and definitely helped me to confidently speak.

In the future the experience will help me with any upcoming events linking to radio-related things and will help me with my job opportunities.

Thank you to BBM Indigenous Radio Station for an awesome week!

I learnt heaps and I am most grateful for the experience.
