Tigers keep undefeated tag

- JORDAN GERRANS

NORTH Cairns are feeling the heat as the hunted in AFL Cairns Womens’ competition.

The Tigers are still unbeaten, with South Cairns their latest victims, but playingcoach Luana Healey says she can feel that the rest of the league is gunning for them.

Cutters came the closest of any team to toppling the 12-0 Tigers on Saturday, falling by just two straight kicks.

“Cutters really used their run through the middle and I think our team took a while to ROUND 15 Manunda Hawks 9.2 (56) d Centrals Trinity Beach 4.1 (25) North Cairns 7.4 (46) d South Cairns 5.4 (34) wake up,” Healey said. “I have to give credit to Cutters because they gave us a good run but our girls were able to hang in there.

“It was pleasing that coming up to finals we can win like that.

“We are undefeated and all the teams are trying to knock us off. As long as we come with the right attitude, that is all you can ask for.”

Judy Duck kicked two of the Tigers’ goals in the victory.

The win over Cutters also doubled as a milestone game for Healey, as the Gold Coast Suns-listed talent notched up 100 games for North Cairns.

“I would not be able to play this many games without the North Cairns Tigers, they have been there for me,” she said.

Finals-bound Manunda were too good for Centrals Trinity Beach in the other Rnd 15 game. CAIRNS Netball Association held the Fowlers Group junior cup on Sunday and 49 teams participated in the one-day event.

Teams from as far south as Tully and north to Port Douglas came to compete.

It was a fantastic day with so many juniors participating.

Looking forward, Marlin Coast Marlins head coach Winnie Whately is preparing her team for the final week as they are scheduled to take on the Queensland State Netball League division two grand final this weekend.

The Marlin Coast Marlins will host the Whitsunday Sharks in the state league netball grand final.

Marlins players will be at junior games and participate in the Crazy Hair Day which is raising funds for a member of our netball fraternity going through a hard time. We’re also asking juniors to form a massive “tunnel” for the Marlins to run through to get our girls psyched for the big game. Players will stay to meet and greet junior players.

Make sure you don’t miss the chance to see the Marlins in action this Saturday, with games at 2pm and 6.30pm.

This weekend will also be the last for our strength and conditioning expert and an amazing man Stephen Bird (pictured). Stephen and James Cook University have brought a professional approach to our player fitness programs and it has most certainly been one of the reasons we have gone undefeated in 12 games. We will sincerely miss Stephen and we cannot thank him enough.
