Helping in relay impressive way

A CAIRNS school raised more than $33,500 for this year’s Cairns Relay for Life, with one of its students named the highest individual fundraiser at the annual event.

St Andrew’s Catholic College students, staff and parents at Redlynch formed themselves into 16 teams.

“We always have at least 15 teams each year,” says Jo Lawson from St Andrew’s.

“Students are very community orientated and very keen to be part of Relay For Life each year.”

One team, Heroes for Hope, raised $10,583.30 with much of that coming from a single member, Molly Burrage, who was this year’s highest individual fundraiser at $7156.

Jo says each St Andrew’s team is encouraged to be an inMeetings dividual team with the support of their parents under the guidance of the college.

“This assists in creating ownership of their teams. They are then driven to achieve their own personal goals, creating their own costumes, banners and batons,” she says.

“We find the students have control over the direction they take and enjoy the experience while being part of the greater community.”

and fundraisers began at the start of the year.

“A whole school fundraiser is held on Purple Day. Each team raised funds for their teams and gold coin donations were split between the teams running stalls on Purple Day.

“Heroes For Hope started fundraising before Christmas.”
