Prices up for cattle of quality

- BRONWYN WHEATCROFT

CATTLE prices improved marginally at yesterday’s Mareeba Combined Agents cattle sale, however bulls were down 2c/kg.

There were no local trade steers up for auction yesterday.

Local trade heifers rose by 6c/kg on last week, while cows were up by 4c/kg.

Slaughter oxes lost 3c/kg, however cows improved on the best of last week at 190c/kg, which was up 5c/kg.

Bulls eased on the previous sale of 227c/kg by 2c/kg.

Bulls to feed on sold in a range 130c/kg to 234c/kg, depending on type, quality and condition.

There were almost no store steers to quote while heifers are finding it hard to reach strong results and males remain firm.

Queensland Rural auctioneer and partner Jacko Shepard said yesterday’s cattle sale was a very similar market to last week.

“Plainer type cattle meet with a very plain market,” he said. “Better quality cattle sold to a good market while other cattle were down.

“Good cattle market was very similar to last week.”

At this week’s Prime and Store Cattle Sale there was a total of 505 head of cattle auctioned, which was down 498.

The next Mareeba Combined Agents Store Sale will be held on August 17, at the Mareeba Saleyards from 10am.

Sellers are asked to contact their preferred agent as soon as possible to book cattle in for the sale.
