Numbers up as AFL players aim for 100 goals

-

CAIRNS City Lions recorded a rare double last Saturday when the seniors and reserves both grabbed wins on the same day, to make it the first two in two years.

Lions’ reserves stocks were that bad in 2017 they did not have a side, so to field a team for the entire season with no forfeits was an achievement itself, but to steal a win late in the campaign was a just reward for their efforts.

There was plenty of teenagers in both the Lions seniors and reserves sides so hopefully there are some positive times ahead for the men from Holloways Beach.

■ AFL Cairns’ favourite son Jack Bowes was in the thick of the Tom Lynch action last week. Respected Brisbane footy scribe Andrew Hamilton reported Bowes was one of several Gold Coast players who traded barbs with Lynch at an ugly meeting for players only, where co-captain Lynch announced his decision to quit and return to Melbourne.

Lynch met the Suns’ extended leadership group before addressing the playing list.

Hamilton wrote that Touk Miller made his feelings known about Lynch’s departure at the first gathering, before Brayden Fiorini, Lachie Weller and Bowes were invited to join the leadership meeting. They also gave strong feedback to Lynch. As a bloke that has been in the Suns’ academy since he was knee-high to a grasshopper, it is understandable that Bowes would be disappointed to see the skipper leave.

■ THE race to 100 goals is heating up in AFL Cairns.

With Tom Eltringham back from injury, the Saints forward is seven goals behind Kye Chapple with a few weeks until finals. The pair should both reach triple figures comfortably and with Port Douglas hosting Manunda this Saturday, the Crocs skipper could get the nine he needs.
