Support grows for farmers

- JACK LAWRIE

BUSINESSES across Cairns are doing their part to support drought-affected farmers.

Bungalow Hotel has taken part in the nationwide “Parma for a Farmer” campaign, donating $1 for every chicken parmy sold in August to go to Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale program.

Hotel general manager Stewart Gibson said they became aware of the campaign through Facebook.

“We have family at Bulloo Downs Station at southwest Queensland, so it’s a very personal issue for us,” he said.

“We’re prioritising Queensland farmers.”

Brothers Leagues Club opted to give $5700 to buy a single trailer load of hay.

Other businesses getting involved include Commonwealth Bank, Woolworths and Coles.

Far Northerners can show their support for farmers by making a donation at https:// www.buyabale.com.au

Through the site, you can choose what you’d like your donation to be spent on, and whether you’d like it to go toward a specific region or all of Australia.

Mareeba grower Makse Srhoj said while the Far North isn’t severely affected by the drought at the moment, it was still a good cause to help out farmers.

“Not long ago we were dealing with water shortages here and it’s still quite bad out west,” he said.
