On renewable power

-

I like wind turbines, and solar power, and the many alt energy systems available or on their way. And though life has been great with coal power, the time for change is well overdue. Earthlover, Machans Beach As a visiting South Australian I can tell you wind turbines are not an alternative to coal fired power plants. In SA we have the most expensive and unreliable power supply you can get. When the wind doesn’t blow the lights go out, fridges defrost and shops shut. Think about the alternatives. John, Palm Cove The Victorian government labels Federal MPs who understand electricity generation as “climate crazies” (CP 9/8). It won’t be long and their power will be as expensive and unreliable as South Australia’s. Next comes economic ruin. Then they’ll expect us to bail them out. Luckily we’ve plenty of clean coal. Miss T, Tolga NEG will come to stand for “No electricity; guaranteed”. Dumbest plan ever. Go Turnbull; your place in history is assured. Trevor, Cairns The words “climate change” are too weak and unalarming to describe the weather extremes the globe is experiencing. “Climate chaos” or “climate catastrophe” sound more powerful, and communicate an urgency to act. David the cabbie, Woree man-made CO2 (editorial, 9/8). But you need to read research from outside institutions captured by the green-left to appreciate that cold, hard fact. Mic, Cairns $500 million to save the Reef … surely half of this could go towards a pipeline for water for farmers. Every year drought and financial relief is needed. By now all of the relief would of have paid for dams and pipes or alternative feed methods to help. Pat, Woree I’m so glad there isn’t an African gang problem in Melbourne. Those locals barricading themselves in their houses must have been hallucinating when they thought they saw youths of African appearance rampaging through Australian streets, and must have been hearing things. Joanne, Mt Sheridan Why do we have a sportsman on the front page of Cairns Post? I’ve never seen a nurse, doctor, paramedic, teacher, police officer etc regularly on the front page with such comments as legend, true champion, greatest, magnificent or immortal. From someone who plays with a ball to others who save lives and put others first, let’s get this correct shall we? Richard, Palm Cove Far North Queensland says thanks to Melbourne’s Billy Slater, who will retire at the end of this 2018 NRL season, but he will forever remain a true champion. Go Billy. Janelle, Woree
