Cutters belt Tigers to send a message
MASSIVE victories over Cairns City Lions and North Cairns in consecutive games may not be impressive to some, but South Cairns coach John Tootell is excited his Cutters are playing the right brand of footy.
Sitting third on the ladder, six games behind secondplaced Cairns Saints, the Cutters are the likely challengers to the top two come September.
Tootell, in his first year at the helm of Fretwell Park, said his side’s last two triumphs were about playing the right way to prepare for Saints and Port Douglas.
“We have spoken about that over the last couple of weeks, playing the way we want to play,” Tootell said.
“It is something we have focused on over the last month, we are still a little bit away from where we want to be but we are getting most of the basics right at the moment.
“We just want to get the process right and we come up against Saints this week.
“We will give it our best crack and see how we go.”
The Cutters hit the scoreboard on 52 occasions in the rout over the Tigers at Watsons Oval on Saturday, with nine different goal kickers.
Cutters captain James Dixon made his return to the side after missing a month of football with a hamstring tear.
The athletic Dixon was forced to withdraw from the North Queensland representative side after suffering the hamstring injury and returned to kick four goals for South Cairns on Saturday.
The undermanned Tigers kicked the second goal of the game but did not kick another.
