Working it out for locals
IN Saturday’s Weekend Post was an article about the number of people required for new and refurbished hotels.
The number mentioned was 520 with more positions to follow.
I realise governments subcontract out various departments and employment is no exception. We have several of these agencies here in Cairns, but I question whether they actually put people in jobs or just go through the motions.
One would hope these agencies are writing to all of their clients telling them to apply for these positions.
As a taxpayer I will be really upset if I read we are bringing people in from overseas to fill these positions.
Cairns currently appears to have a glut of flats and apartments so I see no reason why people from out of town cannot also apply. I personally feel it’s pointless writing to our MPs as all we get is the standard reply. David Holt, Mt Sheridan saddens me is how discourtesy and indifference to people has somehow become the acceptable standard in today’s Australian business world.
I’ve spoken to friends about it and they’ve all experienced the same thing.
When a person goes to the trouble of applying for a job, surely a simple acknowledgment and polite “thanks, but no thanks” reply isn’t too much to ask for?
All communication was done via email so it wouldn’t have even cost them the price of a stamp. But what price can you put on good manners? Mark Franks, Trinity Beach on TV (an attempt to have men also get checked) it really brought out the absolute need to me, for men and women to use the facilities available for cancer awareness now, not tomorrow.
And, yes, over the years I have taken the opportunity of using the check services available and urge everyone to do the same. Naomi Wilson, Bayview Heights
