While there was not a great deal of change in the market, an extra buyer at yesterday’s Mareeba Prime and Store Cattle Sale did help heifer prices rise by 21c/kg.

AN extra buyer at yesterday’s Mareeba Prime and Store Cattle Sale saw heifer prices rise by 21c/kg on last week’s top price.

They topped at $217.2c/kg yesterday compared to last week’s top of $196c/kg.

Elders auctioneer Mark Peters said there was not a great deal of change in the market, but heifer prices were good.

“One buyer was back in the market this week that we haven’t seen in a few weeks, which has helped increase female heifer prices from last week’s sale,” Mr Peters said.

“Slaughter bullocks also improved due to the quality going up.”

He said slaughter bulls had the biggest variations in top and bottom prices due to quality and a bit of competition in the market.

The top slaughter bull went for $242c/kg and the lowest was 80c/kg.

A total of 306 head we penned at this week’s Prime and Store Sale, was an increase of 84 head on last week.

Cow’s prices remained firm to $2c/kg cheaper on last week’s top of $190c/kg.

Slaughter oxen showed an improvement of $13c/kg.

Cows recorded no change, however some good domestic trade heifers did go to export processor for $211c/kg.

Good quality store steers and heifers sold to similar rates as last week and were limited to a small number.
