THE drinks flowed, chatter filled the room and the star of the show, Outback Wrangler Matt Wright, managed to endear himself to every guest.
Friday night’s event was yet another success for The Cairns Post Club, a quarterly VIP event which gives members the opportunity to meet and greet with some of the most interesting, inspiring and charming celebrities in the world.
The fun banter and teasing between host, interviewer and former Olympian Hayley Lewis and Australia’s celebrity croc wrestler Mr Wright proved one of the highlights of the evening.
She picked on his penchant for downing numerous Great Northern stubbies, egged on by Cairns Post sales staff, and he quipped about her inability to stay on track.
About 200 guests, together with event sponsor Westco LDV, heard about the chopper pilot and dangerous animal expert’s early life spent between Papua New Guinea, Cairns, rural South Australia and then Darwin before he started work at a cattle station near Chillagoe. There was a bit of tumultuous family life, tales of bringing dead bats into Edge High State School classrooms and how being a larrikin had caused him plenty of grief at times.
After launching his series, Outback Wrangler, globally on National Geographic in 2011, Mr Wright’s popularity skyrocketed.
He went on to launch a second season 2015 and has started filming season four.
Mr Wright will also bring his conservation expertise to the rhinoceros egg collecting industry in Africa in coming months.
The evening also raised vital funds for Cootharinga North Queensland.
The organisation’s Far North Queensland regional leader Kylie Luce said the $4800 raised would be spread across all clients.
“The night was fantastic, it was a really upbeat and positive event,” she said.
“The presenters Hayley and Matt really engaged well with the audience and broke down those barriers people might have when they go to something like this and don’t know anyone.
“We will use the money to fill in the gaps between the client’s funding and what is needed.
“We’ve already spoken about it and we are going to have a hard think of how we can spread that across all our customers.”
Ms Luce said the aged care sector had high costs with a bed which can be used in a shower facility for high needs clients costing $4000.
The Cairns Post Club will bring another impressive line up as part of the 2018/19 event schedule.
Kicking off on November 9, the grand illusionist Cosentino, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Michelle Bridges and king of the mountain, Michael Groom, will also feature throughout the year.
