SAVAGE A RUGBY CONVERT

- JIM TUCKER

INDIGENOUS flyer Xavier Savage has become the X-factor with sprinter’s genes on the wing for Brisbane Boys’ College this season.

The 16-year-old recently flashed over 100m on the track at school in a slick 10.79sec to highlight the pace that defences have to contend with in GPS rugby.

The Year 10 student is still raw to rugby’s rules because he had never played the code until moving from Trinity Bay State High in Cairns to board at BBC this year.

His try-scoring exploits in league, as well as winning the Under-15s 100m at the Queensland Schools titles last October, put him on the radar.

“I grew up in a league family around Gordonvale but I’m really enjoying learning rugby with the atmosphere, rugby culture and high standards in GPS footy,” Savage said.

“With my studies, it’s also given me another view of what might be possible after school.”

Wingers Savage (five tries) and Shayden Stevens (four) have finished some excellent attacks for BBC.

Their dominance, however, dried up last weekend when The Southport School dominated in the forwards to convincingly win 54-15.

“Xavier is still learning the game … but you can’t coach someone to be as electric as he is from zero to five metres with the ball,” said BBC coach Shane Drahm.

BBC will host Toowoomba Grammar on Saturday.
