Murder case delay

THE case against a man charged with the murder of a woman at Trinity Beach has been delayed over outstandin­g medical reports. Anthony McPhee is accused of killing Kay Shirley Dix on March 27 after her body was allegedly found in a bedroom at the Coral Sands Beachfront resort. Outstandin­g material included the forensic pathologis­t report, which wouldn’t be available until October, a DNA statement and toxicology report. Matters were adjourned until October 3 for committal mention.

Principal appointed

ST ANDREW’S Catholic College middle years deputy principal Luke Felstead has accepted the role of principal at Our Lady Help of Christians School, Earlville, from next year. St Andrew’s principal Lee MacMaster said the appointmen­t was a “wonderful endorsemen­t of Mr Felstead’s commitment to Catholic education and his outstandin­g contributi­ons over many years to St Andrew’s Catholic College and to the Northern Beaches Parish”.

Award for child unit

A PROJECT increasing awareness about youth sexual violence in the Far North has received a top gong from Queensland Police. The Child Protection and Investigat­ion Unit in Cairns launched the Speak Up, Be Strong, Be Heard program as a pilot in Cairns West and Aurukun in 2016. It has extended across Cairns, Cape York and the Torres Strait. The project was recipient of the performanc­e award in the QPS Awards of Excellence.

Funds for drought aid

CAIRNS Regional Council will offer its support to drought-affected communitie­s through a donation to the Country Women’s Associatio­n to provide vouchers. The council will match donations made by local not-for-profit organisati­ons, with a total douncil contributi­on of up to $50,000.

Ride raises $75,000

A TEAM of 14 riding from Airlie Beach to Palm Cove have raised $75,000 in Ride for Sick Kids Queensland. The riders travelled 570km over five days, before crossing the finish line at the Ronald McDonald Family Retreat in Palm Cove.
