Upgrade for clinic

WUCHOPPERE­N Health Service Limited will use a $5000 grant from a joint Energex-Ergon Community Fund for an electrical upgrade at the Manoora campus’ optometry clinic. Wuchoppere­n CEO Dania Ahwang said the works with Ergon would lead to better culturally appropriat­e optometry treatment for patients.

Explore uni life

PROSPECTIV­E students are lining up to explore their tertiary futures with James Cook University’s open day approachin­g on Sunday. The Smithfield campus will have a range of hands-on activities on offer, with talks from local experts and informatio­n about courses and facilities. The open day will run from 11am to 3pm.

Festival in the park

THE 20th Mareeba Multicultu­ral Festival is on tomorrow at Arnold Park. Gates will open 9.30am with a live parade, with food and entertainm­ent by Aboriginal, Torres Strait, PNG, Filipino, Italian, Spanish, Albanian, Greek, Polynesian and Australian performers running throughout. Official proceeding­s begin at 1pm with the welcoming of 22 new citizens to Mareeba Shire. Admission free, show ends 5pm.

Daffodil Day

MORE than 100 volunteers will be out at 21 sites across the Far North today selling flowers and pins to make a difference. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said Daffodil Day was the perfect opportunit­y to show support to loved ones affected by cancer. “The daffodil is the internatio­nal symbol of hope – we can all give hope to Queensland­ers affected by cancer simply by supporting the cause,” Ms McMillan said. $1 million is expected to be raised.

Cruise control

BACK-to-back visits from three P&O cruise ships will bring thousands of passengers and crew to Cairns over the next few days. The ships include Pacific Eden, which home ports in Cairns until the end of the year, and Pacific Explorer, which is one of the largest ships currently able to navigate Trinity Inlet. Pacific Eden is the first to arrive at 7am today, after a Papua New Guinea cruise.
