Tigers keep hopes alive with slim win

- MATT NICHOLLS

TULLY will sweat on the availability of playmaker Colin Wilkie after the veteran was put on report in Saturday night’s 7-6 win against Innisfail.

The Tigers will be hoping Wilkie avoids suspension as they face the Leprechauns again this Sunday in a knockout final at Barlow Park.

Tully coach Aaron Tongalea said he didn’t believe Wilkie had a case to answer.

Wilkie was reported for allegedly making contact with an Innisfail trainer.

“If he gets charged we’ll be fighting it,” Tongalea said.

It was a dour contest at Calendar Park with no tries scored in the second half.

The Tigers scored first through Marcus Nona and the home side responded via Lata Faralelu.

Scores remained deadlocked at 6-6 at half-time and throughout most of the second stanza until Tully’s star halfback Darryl Grant kicked the winning field goal with just minutes remaining.

“We knew it was going to be a defensive contest. Innisfail has a big forward pack and we wanted to try and shift them around,” Tongalea said.

Tongalea said the win would be a confidence booster ahead of the elimination final.

“We know we can beat Innisfail now and that’s going to help us.”

At Mossman, the Sharks secured a double chance with a thrilling win against the Kangaroos.

Eddie Daniel played a starring role in his return from suspension, while Matt Gibuma and Stanley Anau each scored two tries.

Isaiah Pau scored a brace for the Kangaroos, who bowed out of the season with the loss.

Mossman-Port Douglas will now take on Atherton this Sunday at Barlow Park. The winner will play Brothers for a chance at a grand final berth.

Brothers have a week’s rest after finishing on top and will go into the qualifying final extra fresh.

At Gordonvale, Yarrabah looked to have the game sealed against Southern Suburbs, but the home side scored four tries in the last 20 minutes to win 28-22. In Mareeba on Friday night, Ivanhoes finished their season with a 16-8 win against the Gators.
