Cutters determined to maintain momentum

- JORDAN GERRANS

WITH their finals opponent yet to be decided, South Cairns coach John Tootell likes that his side has got a first-hand look at Manunda and Centrals Trinity Beach in the final two rounds of the home and away season.

The Cutters are locked into third position on the AFL Cairns ladder but who finishes fourth and plays them in a fortnight is still up in the air.

The Bulldogs botched their big chance to secure their ticket to the finals, as they put in a poor effort to be convincingly beaten by the Cutters on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity Beach would still be confident of booking a finals berth, needing to beat North Cairns this Saturday and hoping South Cairns’ strong form continues and they topple Manunda.

The Cutters were ruthless after quarter-time on Saturday, banging on 17 goals to just four, and the final two weeks sets them up well for finals, Tootell believes.

“It shows us where we are at,” Tootell said. “It was a good win today and next week we need to play well against Manunda because if we take our foot of the pedal, they will come back at us like they did last round and knock us over.

“We need to make sure we play a good four quarters of footy and it will be good to see Saints and Port knock each other around for two games in a row too.”

Cutters utility Damien Dewis, who kicked four goals in the win over the Bulldogs, said every win at this point of the season is key.

“It is good to get a win over these fellas as we are battling for that third and fourth spot,” Dewis said.

“Hopefully we can take this momentum into next week and then into the finals.” Centrals TB 2.5-17 2.6-18 4.832 6.10-46 South Cairns 2.2-14 8.9-57 12.14-86 19.14-128 Centrals TB Goal Kickers: C.
