Greenwool Suns’ bright spot in 52-point rout

-

FAR North junior Fitzroy Greenwool finished the NEAFL season on a positive, kicking a goal against Sydney Swans on Saturday afternoon.

Greenwool’s Gold Coast were never in the game against the Swans, falling behind by six goals in the opening term.

The fleet-footed teenager kicked one of the Suns’ four goals and was a bright spot in the 52-point defeat.

Meanwhile, Cairns City Lions product Daniel Charlesworth’s Southport won the NEAFL minor premiership for the first time at the end of Round 21 on Saturday.

■ CAMERON Duffy’s Glenorchy firmed as a premiership contender after coming back to win the TSL qualifying final by 14 points over Launceston at Blundstone Arena on Saturday.

But the Pies may have to do it without star Jaye Bowden.

Bowden flew for a mark on the tip of the goal square early in the first quarter but his left knee buckled when he hit the ground.

Minor premier North Launceston are now waiting in the second semi-final at UTas Stadium on Saturday.

The Pies, led by former Manunda ruckman Duffy, went into half time down by 24 points but fought back to win.

■ PHOENIX Mercury tamed Cairns’ Cayla George and her Dallas Wings to decisively win their WNBA firstround sudden-death playoff game. Phoenix, coached by Australian Olympic coach Sandy Brondello, won 101-83 in Tempe, Arizona, to knock the Wings out of the post-season. George’s teammate Liz Cambage had 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Skylar Diggins-Smith led Dallas with 23 points and seven assists.

Phoenix’s All-Star trio and Stephanie Talbot put in a combined 72 points to outmatch the Wings.
