TICKET sales for this year’s Cairns Amateurs Carnival are pointing towards a record breaking crowd across two days.

But chief executive Graham Thornton said the proof would be in the number of people buying tickets at the gate.

“Our ticket sales have been great but it all hinges on general attendance,” he said.

“It is our 60th year so we are hoping for a bumper carnival.”

Mr Thornton said a couple of VIPs would be attending the Saturday event, including the Cairns Taipans.

“Some high profile horse trainers, including Tony Gollan, will be coming up from Brisbane,” he said.

“There are a few people from some NRL teams down south whose names I don’t have yet, but keep an eye out for them because they’ll be up with their entourages.”

He said the weather forecast was just perfect for today and Saturday, with mostly sunny days and a very low chance of rain.

Angela Menz is back as the Carnival Ambassador this year, which will mark the milliner’s seventh year with the Cairns Amateurs.

“The Cairns Amateurs Carnival is a highlight of the racing calendar and I thoroughly enjoy the community spirit and excitement when I step out at Cannon Park Racecourse,” she said.

“The ladies and gentlemen of Cairns always put their best fashion foot forward at the track and as a lover of bold colour and texture it is a treat to see all the stunning outfits come together at Fashions on the Field.

“While judging Fashions on the Field, I will be looking for attention to detail, outfits that show personality and a great overall look.”

Mr Thornton said the Fashions on the Field were second to none.

“This year’s Fashions on the Field has a very high prize pool,” he said.

“Our winners here over the years have been competitors and finalists at the Melbourne Cup, they really are excellent.”

Regular Cairns Amateurs participant Rhiannon SaunTHE ders said moving key events like the high tea and ball to the Esplanade was the right move.

“After the high tea I went to Salt House for some drinks,” she said.

“Moving the events to the Esplanade was a great idea because it keeps people in the CBD and interacting with local businesses.” Tickets to the Cairns Amateurs are available online from cairnsamateurs.org.au for $25 for adults or at the gates today and tomorrow from 11am for $30 for adults and $15 for pensioners and children aged 5-17.
