Hash House Harrier roots extend back to the old English schoolboy game of Hares and Hounds in which some players, called “hounds,” chase others, called “hares,” who have left a trail of paper scraps along their route across fields, hedges, streams, bogs, and hills. Hare and Hounds as an adult sport began in the autumn of 1867 with a group of London oarsmen who wanted to keep fit during the winter.

Innisfail upgrades

ROAD upgrades have begun at two key pinch points along the Bruce Hwy in Innisfail. The $6.1 million contract to upgrade the intersecti­ons at Ash and Pine Sts has been awarded to Koppens Developmen­t. Work is expected to be finished by the end of the year. The project was funded on an 80-20 split between the Federal and State Government­s.

Ellis Beach surf clinic

IRONMAN Ali Day and coach Zayne Hamill from Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club will conduct a surf clinic for North Queensland Branch surf life saving clubs tomorrow and Sunday at Ellis Beach. Training sessions will be run from all ages from under eights to masters and there will be an evening mentoring session for team managers and coaches.

Garden capture

A MANUNDA man who allegedly fled from police was found hiding in a garden. Police were attempting to speak with a group of men on Lavender St when the man allegedly ran away towards Grevillea St. Police Dog Bally and his handler quickly found him hiding in the garden of a nearby residence. An 18-year-old has been charged with trespass, possession of drug utensils and contraveni­ng a domestic violence order and will appear in the Cairns Magistrate­s Court on September 19.
