Grief as plaque defaced

- PETE MARTINELLI peter.martinelli@news.com.au

AN ACT of wanton destruction at Tanya Roneberg’s Trinity Beach memorial has left her family speechless.

Unknown vandals defaced the plaque sometime on Wednesday – the second time in three years.

“I saw it last night when I got a call from my mum and dad down at the beach – it is just callous, senseless and accomplishes nothing,” Tanya’s brother Brett Roneberg said.

The damage – worse than the 2015 incident – betrays the callous nature of the attack.

“It is very heavy marble – it is supposed to last 100 years in the full sun, but if you sit there and hit it hard enough with a rock you’ll damage it,” Mr Roneberg said.

Tanya was killed in 2013 on the Captain Cook Highway when she was struck while cycling.

Tanya’s mother Sharon Roneberg is devastated that someone would do this again.

“For us this just happened yesterday; most people forget what they were doing five years ago,” Mrs Roneberg said.

“For us it feels like someone has done this to our daughter’s face – it is horrible.”

Division 9 Councillor Brett Olds mused whether a CCTV camera was the answer.

“They’d be hoping they don’t get caught – there are a lot of angry people out there,” Cr Olds said.
