Koenen named in QWAFL Team of the Year

-

THE AFLW proper is still a few months away but that has not stopped North Cairns product Breanna Koenen from racking up the awards.

The former Tiger (pictured) was named in the 2018 QWAFL Team of the Year on Sunday night after an outstanding season for the University of Queensland. A big winter in the QWAFL should set her up well for a third season with Brisbane at the elite level. ■ BADU Island product Timakoi Bowie booted a goal for Broadbeach in their 68point drubbing of Morningside in the QAFL seniors preliminary final.

As many of the Gold Coast Suns’ NEAFL side do, the hard-tackling midfielder dropped back to QAFL level and hit the scoreboard in just his second game of the season with the Cats.

Bowie kicked his goal in the first quarter when there was still sting in the game before the Cats kicked away.

The Cats now play Palm Beach Currumbin in the decider on Saturday at Yeronga.

Last year, teenage Cairns Saints pair Jacob Heron and Caleb Graham lifted the QAFL premiership with Palm BeachCurrumbin.

Bowie has also played with Saints in AFL Cairns. ■ CAIRNS’ Cayla George and her Opals teammates were beaten by Spain yesterday morning 65-59 in an exhibition match a less than a week before the 2018 FIBA World Cup for Women tips off. George grabbed seven rebounds in the loss. ■ INNISFAIL UFC fighter Jessica-Rose Clark says she is using her unanimous decision loss to Jessica Eye at UFC Singapore in June as motivation for her next fight.

Clark, who had won her previous three fights prior to facing Eye, will fight American kickboxer Andrea Lee in Milwaukee this December.
