HERBERTON Memorial Bowls Club’s results for September 15. First round of the Porphyry Stone Shield was played at Herberton against Dimbulah with Herberton narrowly defeating Dimbulah. The second round will be played at Dimbulah on Saturday, October 13. No jackpot winner. The Cairns Men’s Two Bowls Triple Classic Supported by local sponsors, Cairns Oil Distributors and Allan Sanderson on Saturday. The winning team results were skipped by: in 1st place with 68 pts Denis Jacoora team. In 2nd place with 63 pts. Mal Taylor team and in 3 rd place with 60 pts: Tony McAlary team. We had twenty six players on the West Cairns Bowls Club last Monday including the return of our two resident Japanese members. Winners were the pairs players of Annie Underwood and Tomiko Ichise. Regardless of where you usually play bowls we would welcome you on any Monday afternoon to participate in social mixed bowls on the covered green. Names for players are accepted up to 1.00pm on playing day on 0409624623 or by adding your name to the list at the club. If you haven’t played with us before, please advise your usually played position at time of nomination. Cards are called at 1.15pm and all members are asked to be at the club at that time. On Thursday it was disappointing that only 21 players showed up when Graeme Anderson had donated the trophies. As a result it was decided to postpone the trophies until next Thursday and play our normal social day. The winners were J.Fossey, D.Lowe M.Clifford. Saturday saw 21 players on the green. Winners were G.Edgerton, N.Hall, K.Mason. Because of the staging of the Innisfail Invitation Fours there will be no social play next Saturday. On Sunday one game of consistency singles was played. In a close game, G.Edgerton defeated J. Walker. The Games Director has called nominations for 2019 Club Competition. Arrange your teams and add them to the nomination sheets on the notice board. Coming Events: Thursday 20th September: Graeme Anderson is providing the trophies. We need a minimum of 30 players to make the game worthwhile. It is a great opportunity for those participating in the Invitation Fours to get some practise. Saturday/Sunday 22nd/23rd September: Invitation Fours. If you have some spare time, please come down and see some good bowls and help the other volunteers to ensure that this a successful weekend. Sunday 7th October: A visit to Gordonvale Club has been arranged for Sunday afternoon.We are looking for about 16 players. Add your names to the list on the board so transport arrangements can be made. Sunday 14th October:Monthly Self selected triples. This monthly game was deferred from the first Sunday because of the visit to Gordonvale. A great day was had by all with beautiful spring weather for Maureen Todd’s Cane Train Fours played on 13th September, Our thanks to Maureen and Jim for their great support and sponsorship, it is greatly appreciated. The Coulthard combination also managed to break the club record for refreshments during play. It was a hot day. The money back lucky card was won by Stan Williams’ fours team. Tony Perkins picked up the free game for next week. Lawn bowls under the roof with a cool breeze is the way to go in Summer. Visitors most welcome. Ladies Results On Thursday we held our Doreen Ponzo Day. It was great to see 24 Ladies on the green. Runners up Gloria Greeves, Glen Lepp,Denise Highland 2W+21. Winners Estelle O’Rourke, Margaret Cooper, Carole Maxted 2W+24. The game was followed by a lovely afternoon tea, then Peter Ponzo presented the prizes. A great afternoon was had by all. The final round of the Graded Pairs will be played on Thursday 27th September at 1.00 pm. Wed 12/9/18 Mixed social saw a good field of 43 bowlers with a few new faces, great to see. Winners: Joy Knight, B Pollock & G Tyrer 2 wins plus 32. 2nd G Marsh, T Brookling & T Richards 2 wins plus 13. 3rd C Richards, T Speachly, S Cunningham & Angie Fleming 2 wins plus 11. Saturday men’s jackpot bowls My apologies I didn’t get the cards, but I do know that G Marsh, Les Phillips and B Hando won their game and N Fletcher, T Holmes & G Wilmot won their game which tends to show the Wonga bowlers being superior again. I can also tell you that a capable team of Bernie, Eric, M Frese and G Tyrer went to Stratford for an open comp on Sunday and got belted by a couple of ladies in the first game and another belting by mum, dad, and a couple of kids in the second game before restoring a little pride against a gun team in the last game. And now we have a week off as we all eagerly await our new lights, so to quote Lesley to Ted “just you wait and see”.
