Sweet way to help farmers
A CAIRNS restaurant has come up with a sweet idea to help drought-affected farmers and those caught up in the strawberry needle crisis. Dundee’s Restaurant bar manager Jacob Low (left) and head chef James Wort hope lovers of the fruit will support the fundraiser. It comes after a needle was found in a banana bought at a Cairns Woolworths supermarket.
A CAIRNS restaurant has brought out a couple of special menu items to encourage diners not to lose faith in strawberries or the Australian growers that supply them.
Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront is now selling the Strawberry Delight sundae and Karma for a Farmer cocktail.
The sundae uses local Shaylee strawberries macerated in Cointreau and sticky balsamic glaze, layered with double cream and macadamia nuts.
The Karma for a Farmer cocktail likewise uses fresh strawberries, along with passionfruit, Wild Strawberry Liqueur, Malibu and apple juice.
Chef James Wort who devised the sundae said people should know what brands are safe and don’t let the needle scare discourage them from buying strawberries.
“Everybody should jump on board to purchase strawberries so it does a reverse effect to the people that are trying to discourage it,” he said.
Restaurant director Tina Wort said all strawberries used at the restaurant were prepared with care.
“We get our strawberries from Simon George & Sons in Portsmith and they’re washed, cut and presented to make sure they’re safe,” she said.
